Pondering on a Sunday
Sunday, June 21st, 2009Just some thoughts:
If it weren’t for Roger Vivier, I doubt we’d have Manolo Blahnik. So, to say that Blahnik is the most influential shoe designer ever is probably fallacious.
I may hyphenate my name when I get married. I may also ask, since I’m wearing a ring to signify my commitment to someone else, that whoever I marry do the same. I may not even legally change my name. It all depends on where I am academically (and how old I am)–I would consider it a tribute to my hard-working ancestors to keep my maiden name if I get an advanced degree.
I really hope I marry someone who won’t freak out if I start talking like that.
I also hope I don’t marry someone who is intimidated by me. If intelligence threatens some men, then I want nothing to do with them. If intelligence is threatening, I don’t think I’m the one who needs to change. In fact, I think if a man is threatened by an intelligent woman (to the point of actually wanting her to “dumb it down” in public), there’s something seriously wrong with him.
Remember in “The Dark Crystal” when the three suns converge? That’s what I think next year will be like–three major things happening at once or in close sequence. I still don’t know everything, but I get the feeling that any or all of three specific things will happen.
Friday night, I saw a girl who was so thin that it was hard to look at her. Some people would have found her really attractive, but that makes me wonder if it’s social conditioning.
And, finally, if I DO end up going to North Carolina for a few months (or even a year or two), I think it will be a really good idea to have a car. The church I’d be attending is a 40 minute drive from Penland and I don’t think they have a bus route. However, driving cross-country in February is a little daunting, even to me; I’ll have to take the longer route and go South instead of across the Plains. Goodness knows I don’t want to get caught in one of those blizzards!
